Luan Quach -- Judging Philosophy

I don't judge paintings simply by technical skills or conformity to a particular style. You look at how effectively an artist uses their visual language to create an experience.

Looking Beyond the First Impression

As a juror, I look beyond technical execution to consider how successfully a painting transforms its subject into a meaningful visual experience. A strong painting may capture attention immediately, but the works that stay with me are those that continue to reveal something through thoughtful design, light, colour, and personal expression.

1.  Impact & Lasting Impression

I first look for that elusive “wow factor”—the quality that makes a painting immediately compelling. But beyond the first impression, I consider whether the work continues to speak to me and grows in meaning with time.

2. Design, Light & Simplification

Strong paintings are built on strong visual decisions. I look for thoughtful composition, effective use of big shapes, mass, value, light and shadow, and the ability to simplify without losing the essence of the subject. Less can often say more.

3. Colour & Watercolour Language

I value colour that serves the painting—not colour for its own sake. Warm and cool relationships, harmony, contrast, transparent washes, edges and brushwork can all contribute to atmosphere and expression. Technical skill becomes meaningful when it supports the artist's intention.

4. Personal Voice & Authentic Expression

I look for evidence of an artist's own voice. Originality does not necessarily mean being unconventional; it means making personal and purposeful choices. I value paintings where technique, brushwork, colour and design come together to express something uniquely felt by the artist.

5. Connection, Discovery & Meaning

Ultimately, I ask what happens between the painting and the viewer. Does it create atmosphere, emotion, curiosity or a sense of discovery? Does it invite the viewer to linger, explore, or imagine a story beyond what is immediately visible? The strongest works can become more meaningful the longer we spend with them.
