Award-Winning Watercolour Portrait Artist, Educator & Storyteller

Luan Quach is an award-winning Canadian watercolour portrait artist, educator, and storyteller. He is recognized for his expressive portraiture, bold use of colour, and his ability to capture the emotion and character of his subjects through light, shadow, and confident brushwork.

Through both his paintings and his teaching, Luan invites people to look beyond outward appearances and discover the unique beauty, character, and story within every individual.

A Journey Shaped by Art and Life

Luan's artistic journey began in childhood in Vietnam. Because he suffered from severe asthma, he spent much of his early years at home, where he discovered drawing and developed a lifelong passion for art.

After arriving in Canada as a refugee, Luan built a successful career in engineering. Years of solving technical challenges sharpened his analytical thinking,  observation, and problem-solving skills—qualities that continue to influence and strengthen his artistic practice today.

More than three decades away from painting, Luan returned to art with renewed passion and purpose. Combining the discipline of engineering, artistic sensitivity, and a deep appreciation for the human experience, he creates watercolour portraits that go beyond physical likeness to reveal personality, emotion, and meaningful human connection.

Teaching Philosophy and Artistic Mission

As an educator, Luan believes that learning to paint begins with learning how to see.

His teaching emphasizes observing the subject as a whole, simplifying complexity, understanding form and the relationship between light and shadow, and exploring the harmony and expressive power of colour. Rather than teaching technique alone, he encourages students to develop a new way of seeing—one that enables them to discover beauty both in art and in everyday life.

Luan's life and artistic journey have been profoundly shaped by his faith in Jesus Christ. He believes that creativity is a gift from God and hopes that through his paintings, teaching, and personal story, he can encourage others, share hope, and ultimately bring glory to God.
